What's Happening

Dear San Diego Denizens,

Lots to experience and enjoy in the coming days! Celebrations and festivals include two different Holi (festival of colors) festivals: the Sewa San Diego Holi celebration at Village Green Park and the CRY San Diego Holi celebration at Hourglass Field. Saturday afternoon, the San Diego Chinese Museum will present its annual Lantern Festival to "light up the new year"! Next Thursday, the Japanese Friendship Garden will start its annual Cherry Blossom Festival. Also, next Thursday, there will be a Passover Block Party at the JCC.

Music and dance concerts for the weekend begin with the Genbu Daiko 10th Anniversary Concert (Taiko) at Cuyamaca College on Saturday. The Festival de Danza at the Joan B. Kroc Theatre on Sunday will feature traditional dances of Mexico. Also on Sunday, world music cellist Ian Maksin will perform at the First United Methodist Church. Next Thursday, popular Guatemalan singer and songwriter Ricardo Arjona will be at Pechanga Arena. Next Friday and Saturday at La Jolla Playhouse's Mandell Weiss Forum Theatre, the WinterWorks dance concert will feature dances choreographed by Bernard Brown, Melissa Tannus, and Alison D. Smith.

Book, literature, and spoken word events this week are as follows. On Saturday, there will be a Ramadan Storytime and Craft event at the Mission Valley Library. Three events take place on Tuesday: Jewish Poets—Jewish Voices celebrates the start of its 19th season at the JCC; author Sujata Massey will discuss and sign copies of her book The Mistress of Bhatia House at Warwick’s; and there will be a Ramadan Storytime at the Carmel Valley Library. Next Wednesday, the Chinese Historical Museum will host readings from Chinese Love Stories. Also next Wednesday, at SDSU’s Love Library, poet Paola Capó-García will read from her most recent works.

Theatrical productions around San Diego include Hedda Gabler at the Old Globe, Somewhere Over the Border at Jacobs Performing Arts Center, Six (Teen Edition) at Canyon Crest H.S., and Vignettes for two shows at New Village Arts on the 8th and 15th.

Other cross-culturally infused events include the comedy revue Garam Masala Dating at The Yellow Door on Saturday, a Mandala Painting Class at Bravo School of Art on Sunday, a talk with artist Niki de Saint Phalle at Alliance Française on Tuesday, the film Hercules Unchained at Charlie & Echo next Thursday, and next weekend's (Friday and Sunday) screening of the German film From Hilde, With Love at the Digital Gym.

Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular, we are seeking our readers' help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!

Recipe of the Month

This month's recipe is for Sajiyeh, a traditional Jordanian and Palestinian stir-fry often cooked outdoors over an open flame. It offers a simple yet flavorful combination of seared meat and peppers that highlights the rustic, communal spirit of Levantine cuisine.

CD of the Month

Our International Music CD of the Month is Instrumental Music from Lebanon by Andre Haji. This release is a beautiful album, based on the rich cultural tradition of Lebanese music. It highlights the traditional oriental orchestra (takht), consisting of oud, buzuk, qanun, ney, oriental violin and double bass with Arabian percussions such as tabla, riqq, katem, mezher and others.

Book of the Month

Our Book of the Month is The True True Story of Raja the Gullible (and His Mother) by Rabih Alameddine, winner of the National Book Award. The novel is a "Beirut-in-a-box" narrative where Rabih Alameddine masterfully explores the friction between an aging mother’s sharp-tongued memories and her philosophy-teacher son’s existential exhaustion. Set within the confines of a single apartment, the novel serves as a microcosm of Lebanese history, blending domestic comedy with a profound meditation on the stories we tell ourselves to survive a crumbling world.
